All Over Color or Highlights https://www.haircuttery.com/all-over-color-or-highlights/ https://www.haircuttery.com/all-over-color-or-highlights/#respond Fri, 20 May 2022 14:00:00 +0000 https://live-hair-cuttery-blog.pantheonsite.io/?p=7871 Should you get all over color or highlights? We've broken down the best approach for each technique to help you make the right choice for you!

All Over Color vs Highlights: Which is Better?

Kim Kardashian’s Marilyn Monroe-inspired red carpet look for the 2022 Met Gala sent shock waves through the beauty industry. Not only did Kim permanently say goodbye to her signature dark-haired tresses–she went totally platinum in one day! Yes, she could have just slapped on a luxurious lace front wig. But, we totally get it, Kim. Sometimes when we want a blonde moment, we want a REAL blonde moment. However, many of our Guests still ask, “should I get all over color or highlights?” We’ve broken down the benefits of each option to help guide you through your next hair color change or upgrade. Here are some things to consider before your next trip to your local Hair Cuttery.

Reasons to Choose All Over Color

If you want to go several shades lighter or several shades darker, a single-process (or all-over) color may the way to go. This process changes your entire color into a new, dimensional, monochromatic tone that can be as dramatic or subtle as you like. It’s a nice option for adding warmth to immediately radiating your skin tone or covering stubborn grays. All-over color can also complement a trendy haircut that might look too eccentric with highlights. Ask your Stylist about Redken Color Lacquers, a hair color line that provides superior coverage and lasting shine to hair!

All Over Color with Partial or Full Highlights

You can get both processes with Single Color and Foils or Balayage value packages at Hair Cuttery. This is a good choice if you want to cover gray hair but still want the extra dimension highlights offer. It’s a huge time saver because you get all over color and highlights done simultaneously. With our Value Packages, you have the option of getting partial or full highlights with foils or balayage. Consult your Hair Cuttery Stylist about their recommendations for achieving your best look.

Reasons to Choose Highlights

dark hair color with highlights from hair cuttery

Highlights are your best option if you have a great base hair tone and don’t want to mess too much with what Mother nature gave ya! Highlights will enhance your natural color by adding lighter strands that can be purposefully placed to frame your face. Highlights also give you the chance to draw attention to a layered haircut. The process is very flattering on brunette and dark blonde hair and useful for covering unwanted gray hair. Definitely going lighter and don’t need anymore convincing? Ask your Hair Cuttery Stylist about adding Olaplex Supplement Treatment during your color service to keep your hair protected.

Preparing for Your Color Visit

When you book a color service with us, it will always start with a free consultation! Come prepared by bringing photos of the color or highlights you desire (see our blog about prepping for every salon visit). There’s no such thing as a silly question when you’re in the salon chair! Your Stylist knows how important it is to embark on a new color journey. Our Stylists will patiently answer all your questions and ask you important questions, too. Be honest about how you normally wear and care for your hair. Keep in mind, if you want to follow in Kim Kardashian’s dark to light footsteps, reaching your desired look may take several salon visits to protect your hair’s health. After your service, we strongly recommend investing in professional haircare products to keep your hair healthy and your color vibrant. Your Stylist will know exactly what to recommend from our shelves.

We love seeing all the color transformations from our salons. Post your stunning before and after selfies using #MyHCStyle so we can see your final results and share/like on Instagram or Facebook!

10 Tips To Keep Color-Treated Hair Vibrant https://www.haircuttery.com/10-tips-keep-hair-color-vibrant/ https://www.haircuttery.com/10-tips-keep-hair-color-vibrant/#respond Wed, 18 May 2022 17:00:00 +0000 https://blog.haircuttery.com/?p=8427 Color-treated hair needs special care. But don't worry, we've put together our top 10 tips to keep your color-treated locks looking their best!

The post 10 Tips To Keep Color-Treated Hair Vibrant appeared first on Hair Cuttery Salons.

With proper care and a little creativity, you can keep your color-treated hair looking shiny and vibrant. This is good news since 70% of women in the U.S. color their hair! To help protect your hair color and keep your hair looking lovely, we spoke with our Artistic/Technical Director & Product Consultant, Steve Waldman, to get his expert advice to get the longest-lasting color in-between salon visits.

Color-treated Hair Tips

1. Use the right haircare – Avoid using harsh shampoos that will make your hair dull. Products recommended by your stylist that are designed specifically for color treated hair will help retain your color. We love cibu® Color Shampoo and Conditioner to provide essential moisture, shine and the anti-fading properties of Green Tea.

2. Stay on schedule – Rebook your next appointment before leaving the salon. Every 4 weeks for root touch-ups and all over color, 6-8 weeks for highlights and dimensional color will keep your hair looking great between salon visits.

3. Keep your cool – Did you know hot water can fade your color faster? Shampoo and condition your hair with lukewarm water to retain rich vibrancy and tone. Plus, it’s also better for your skin too!

4. Get Extra Gloss– Don’t settle for dull hair. You can keep it shiny with a gloss treatment to help lock in color and make your hair the shining star!

5. Start with the perfect canvas – A clarifying treatment before your color service will remove build-up and minerals in the hair that can reduce your color’s longevity.

6. Wet your hair with fresh water before swimming – If you have plans to spend a day at the beach or pool, you should rinse your hair before getting in the water. Saltwater can dry out hair, while pool chemicals can affect tone. Wetting it with fresh water first keeps your hair from soaking up the salt water or pool water and will keep it healthier.

7. Invest in tone-infusing haircare– Ask your stylist about shampoos and conditioner that will gently keep your hair’s tone on point and flattering. Use them as directed and rinse with cool water to seal the cuticle. For highlighted hair, blondes and silvers- we love cibu Platinum Brightening Shampoo to brighten, tone and protect hair color.

8. Comb your hair with the right tool to reduce breakage – Hair is fragile, especially when it’s wet! Instead of ripping through snarls with a regular comb or brush, use a Wet Brush or wide-tooth comb. Begin at the ends of your hair in sections and work your way carefully to the roots. If you use heat styling tools, spray some cibu® Thermal Shine Spray on prior to combing for added slip, shine and heat protection.

9. Sleep on a silk or satin pillowcase – Cotton pillowcases create friction and actually draw moisture out of your hair. Smooth fabrics, like silk or satin, do not. They also reduce tangles and frizz, leading to smoother, shiny hair and less styling time in the morning. It’s also helpful to fight wrinkles (double win)!

10. Protect hair from the sun – It’s not just your skin, UV rays can damage your hair too! This can result in fading hair color. Keep hair covered and out of direct sunlight when possible. Refresh and revive hot, thirsty hair with a few mists cibu® CBD Moisture Leave In Conditioning Spray.

It’s February: Are you sick of winter yet? Yes? We soooo hear you. The endless gray, the numbing cold, the dullness. If you’re more than ready to shake up the seasonal dreariness (and who could blame you!), may we suggest supercharging your tresses with pop of seriously bold color? Say hello to Pulp Riot, the best brilliant hair color company around. Whether you want a shock of pop or are looking for a major, head-turning, all-over moment, stop by one of our salons and get ready to color your world.

But first… some facts about Pulp Riot:

This semi-permanent dye—offered in 15 customizable shades, from ultra-vivid to pretty pastels—is applied directly to your hair without any peroxide, so it’s gentler (read: less damaging). Since it coats just the outside of the hair, the color gradually fades through 20-40 washes, lightening evenly over time, which is a major plus for commitment-phobes who don’t want permanent color. Pulp Riot is cruelty-free, vegan and free of silicones, ammonia and parabens. Oh, and one more fun fact: it’s powered by quinoa (!), which delivers amazing shine.

Color, color, everywhere!

So many colors to choose from! What color would look best on you? It depends on the undertones in your skin. To figure that out, check the veins in your wrist in natural daylight. If they look blue or purple, your skin is cool-toned. If the veins look green or olive, your skin is warm-toned. Can’t tell?? Lucky you: You might be neutral, which means you have more flexibility. For cooler skin tones, think blues, lilacs, violets and light pinks. Warm skin tones can rock hot reds, lemon yellow and warm corals.

Gray skies, snow-covered streets, black clothes (the better to hide slush stains!)… the winter months aren’t exactly filled with bright color. Seasonal blah’s may have you down, but don’t let it stop you when it comes to your hair color. Winter 2020 is a time of contrasts—so whether it’s ice-queen blonde, rich red or deepest, darkest brunette, these fabulous new hues can liven up your look, even on the dreariest of days. And while no color ever goes completely out of style, certain shades do have their moments. So what are the “it” hair colors for right here, right now? Below is a sampling of our fave shades of the season.

model with rich, chocolate brown long hair

MAHOGANY

Oh, brunettes, how we adore this gorgeous, saturated shade for winter! It was a strong contender last summer, but during the colder months of winter we’re taking it a bit richer and deeper. Looking for added drama? Go ultra-dark and add depth with plum “mulled wine” undertones. A plus: Mahogany looks great with practically everyone’s skin tone.

COPPER TONES

Rich caramel or copper highlights are like a kiss of sunlight (even in the snow), bringing gorgeous warmth to chocolate or chestnut brown hair by blending two shades of brown (as shown here), it results in incredible depth of color.

BLENDED BALAYAGE

We still love this oh-so-flattering (and wonderfully low-maintenance) blonde-brunette blend; it’s like getting the best of both worlds with less upkeep! Give the color a soft fade from dark roots to blonder tips. And to brighten the look, try framing your face with blond pieces.

model with dark, curly hair

DARKER HUES

If light hair just isn’t your cup of tea, take your tresses in the opposite direction with a dramatic black or almost-black color. It’s a classic that always looks chic, year after year. And the glossy, glassy finish looks absolutely amazing when it catches the light.

model with platinum blonde, soft wave hair

ICY BLONDE

Light blonde (aka platinum) is gorgeous for winter. Two great examples of this trend were seen at this year’s Golden Globes: Michelle Williams’s wavy bob (LOVE!!!) and Charlize Theron’s sleek platinum pixie (which positively lit up Instagram). Not ready to take the all-platinum plunge? Babylights are a beautiful way to lighten up your blonde tresses without fully committing to the all-over, single-process look.

model with honey blonde balayage hair

HONEY BLONDE

As pretty in winter as it is in warmer months, this is a great shade for blondes and brunettes who don’t want their color to look too severe. Jennifer Lopez has mastered the honey blonde hue, brightening her naturally dark brown locks by shifting to golden brown with warm blonde highlights.

model with pink and orange faded hair put up into a bun

THINK PINK!

Pink and rosé shades are always a fun choice. Take it super bright (we’re thinking of you, World Cup soccer champ Megan Rapinoe!), or soften it up in a strawberry pink pastel. Want to dip your toe into the pink color trend before going for an all-over look? Consider testing the waters with dip-dyed ends, like Demi Lovato.

model with strawberry blonde curly hair

SHADES OF RED – STRAWBERRY BLONDE

Red is red-hot for 2020, and the good news is in the variety of shades available. Want to keep it lighter? Strawberry blonde is a great option. Here, Nicole Kidman transforms her usual blonde locks to a deeper, warmer note, starting with blonde roots and shifting to gorgeous coppery strawberry at the ends.

model with fiery red hair

SHADES OF RED – FIERY RED

No matter how cold it is outside, the heat is on with this head-turning hue. As vibrant as a flame, this gorgeously glossy shade is red-hot—read: not at all brassy. We love the way it looks on Amy Adams.

model with cranberry colored hair

SHADES OF RED – CRANBERRY

You might not be eating much cranberry sauce post-Thanksgiving, but this deep, berry-red hue reads almost fuchsia for a look that’s positively stunning in winter. If you don’t want to take it all the way, you could consider cranberry highlights or lowlights… or try a cranberry ombre.

model with dark root faded to silver then pink tips

SILVER BELLES

Speaking of wintry beauties… embrace your inner ice queen with an shimmery silver hue. We’ve seen this shade on the runways and red carpets more and more—and we just adore it for its over-the-top drama and gorgeous metallic sheen. Keep it sleek and chic (as seen on Cynthia Erivo at this year’s Golden Globes), or add some depth to the smoky ice trend with shadowy roots.

Pumpkin spice, anyone? Coffee, donuts…hair? Yes, please! As we welcome autumn, many of us welcome everything pumpkin spice… even our hair color. With the transition of each season, it’s a perfect time to change the color of our hair and get inspo from Mother Nature. Over the summer, we wanted to be lighter and brighter, and now come fall we want to be darker, richer and warmer. If you’re wondering what to do with your hair color this fall, come to Hair Cuttery where our stylists will give you the perfect shade of pumpkin spice to upgrade up your look.

Pumpkin Spice Has Options

If you were one of the many who added highlights to your hair this summer or possibly went solid blonde, you might be looking for a little change to your hue. Or maybe you want to revive your tone for the season to give you that burst of color. Whatever the scenario, pumpkin spice hair color is all the rave at Hair Cuttery. Here are some different ideas to incorporate the beautiful, amazing, show-stopping pumpkin spice glam:

  • All-over color. Depending what your beginning hair color is, this could be a bold choice or a subtle burst of color. Pumpkin spice isn’t one set color, but is predominantly copper red with tones such as auburn, strawberry blonde and dark brown throughout. Depending on the level of darkness you want and the desired highlighting hues, your Hair Cuttery Professional can tailor a warm, autumnal hair color to you that will make your eyes pop and skin glow.
  • Highlights. If you have a darker base and want to add lighter bursts of pumpkin spice’s beautiful coppers and reds, lightening sections of your hair then finishing with a perfect warm tone will have you feeling one with the season. With highlights, you can choose to be quite subtle with a few thin sections, or go with a heavy highlight to make your base color look ultra-dimensional.
  • Lowlights. Coming out of summer, many of you may fall into this category. It’s time to ditch that heavy blonde or caramel color to something deeper and warmer. Same as with a highlight, there is precise control with adding a lot or a few lowlights. This darker color is going to deepen the appearance of your base and possibly help blend in some regrowth by extending this darker color throughout your lengths.

Another thing that might help make your decision to embrace this great color option, is that the permanency level is variable. You can dive in and ask for our REDKEN Color Lacquers permanent hair color that will stay truest to color until it grows out or is recolored, and covers 100% grey. Or you can opt for a  REDKEN Shades EQ demi-permanent color, which will fade slowly and gradually, giving you a longer-lasting option but a less committed option than permanent.

Maintenance Tips for Pumpkin Spice Hair

Like any hair color, there is a level of maintenance we recommend to keep your color true and long-lasting. Follow these tips to maintain your pumpkin spice color as long as possible:

  • Use color care products like Redken Color Magnetics line or Cibu Color Shampoo & Conditioner. These are paraben- and sulfate-free, nourishing and protective to help minimize fading.
  • Don’t wash too frequently. The more you wash, the sooner your color can start to fade; this is less of an issue with permanent color, but washing too often can still lead to fading. In addition to maintaining shinier, more lustrous color, it’s also generally healthier for your scalp and hair to be moisturized through the body’s natural oils. Washing your hair every day strips it of those oils.
  • Refresh your red. Keeping your color refreshed is sure to keep you happy. Depending on the level of permanency, shade of pumpkin spice color you choose and the condition of your hair, you may want to refresh every 4-6 weeks to 10-12 weeks. Chat with your Hair Cuttery Professional about a schedule that would work for you and your hair care needs.

When you’re trying to learn hair lingo, it can be a little confusing sometimes. Case in point: what is single process vs double process hair coloring? Aside from simply what it states: single being one process and double being two (or more), you might not understand which processes fall into which category. That’s where we’re going to help you.

What is Single Process Hair Coloring?

Single Process haircolor highlights on virgin brunette hair
Hair By Sissy at our North Haven, CT salon.

What needs to be known before you can say “single or double” is what the beginning canvas (your current hair) is and what your hair goal is. If your hair is virgin (has not been chemically processed at all), achieving a variety of outcomes can be a single process, where previously colored hair can get a little tricky and require more than one process (but not always). If you’re thinking about a drastic change, that usually calls for a double process. Here are some examples of single processes:

  • Highlights on Virgin Hair: You desire highlights (ribbons of color that are lighter than your base) on your virgin or previously colored but not-over-processed hair. This will likely be a single process which entails lightening pieces of your hair through one of many different techniques (foils, balayage, etc.) then toning to achieve the final outcome. Though toning may seem like an additional step, leaving you uncertain if this trickles into a double process, it does not. When hair is lightened, it goes through many stages of warmth (red, orange than yellow); a toner is applied to counteract unwanted pigments, enhance a tone or add shine—it’s simply a second step that’s frequently involved when lightening the hair.
  • Lowlights: If your goal is to add lowlights (ribbons of color that are darker than your base), likely plan for a single process. Similar to highlights, this can be achieved through many techniques, like foils or balayage, depending on your color goals. However, instead of lightening the hair, color is being deposited which will leave you with the expected tone as soon as the color is washed out.
  • Gray Coverage: Somehow, someway, your hair is turning gray and there’s no way you want it to stay… single process here. Whether you’re looking for solid, all-over color or want to maintain with a root re-touch, permanent color will cover grays with one application.
  • Gradual Lightening: Let’s say you want to gradually achieve very light, very pale blonde throughout your hair. When you lighten, warmth is released and it is not a guarantee that all this warmth can be broken through in one process while achieving the lightness you desire. Slow and steady can help maintain the integrity of your hair, so with your Hair Cuttery Professional you decide several sittings is the way to go for your needs. Each session, your stylist will lighten over the area that’s previously been lightened until the desired color is achieved. This could take 1, 2, 3 or more sessions spread a few weeks or months apart, depending on your initial canvas and desired look. Though this involves multiple sessions, it is a single process within that session so it’s still classified as a single process color.

What is Double Process Hair Coloring?

Ok, ok, so you’re really wondering what falls into this category if there is so much above in single process hair color. Here are a few examples of a double process:

  • Platinum Blonde: I am sure you’ve thought about it, but if you’ve decided to try it, be prepared to sit for many hours. Even on virgin hair, hair would likely need to be decolorized multiple times to achieve the proper lightness. This all depends on what your starting color was; the darker your base, the more patient you need to be. If your hair has previously been colored, it is harder to work through the amount of warmth that will surface, making this possibly a double, triple or multiple-session process. However, once your hair has been successfully decolorized, it will remain that way, meaning it won’t gradually get darker. What’s super important, however, is maintenance. If you want to stay platinum and keep your following appointments a single process, you should have your roots re-touched every 4-6 weeks, use pigment-based shampoo and conditioner like Cibu Platinum products, and have toner re-applied to your ends to knock out resurfacing warmth.

  • Fashion Colors: Pulp Riot is an amazing line of vibrant, beautiful colors that allow you to express yourself through color. The more noticeable you want the color to be, the lighter your base color needs to be. Unless you’re already blonde, it is common that your Hair Cuttery Professional will first lighten your hair, wash it, dry it, then go for round two when they’ll apply the desired color. This will process the full time then be washed out and you’ll have great color.
  • Corrective Color: If your color has gone wrong—maybe a friend did it at home in your bathroom because a YouTube tutorial looked “so easy”—you may find yourself needing a double process session to correct what went wrong. Please do not let this be you—if you feel you need change, come to Hair Cuttery first! Corrective color can require many, many hours in the salon, a lot of patience and potentially a hefty price tag.

One vs. Two

There are times in life we would love double of a lot of things… I mean, two is always better than one, right? Not always! Be kind to your hair and try to avoid the need for a double process color—unless you’re going for something extreme, then carry on and have fun! As always, talk with your Hair Cuttery Professional about hair ideas you have contemplated, check out the HC Lookbook and, together with your stylist, come up with the plan that’s best for you.

Pulp Riot is an amazing semi-permanent color that your Hair Cuttery stylist can create a unique look just for you. Fashion or Vivid hair colors are exciting and full of self-expression. Pulp Riot gradually fades through washes but doesn’t disappoint while it changes. The ease of this semi-permanent color allows the flexibility to try many colors without damaging your hair. If you only want a pop of vivid hair color, try some peek-a-boo highlights. These highlights are placed throughout the under portion of your hair and are noticeable when your hair moves in certain ways, is curled and sometimes when pulled up.

Coloring your hair can be subtle or bold, high maintenance or low maintenance… if you’re intrigued, continue reading to learn about balayage. Balayage allows precise placement of color by your Hair Cuttery Professional in the perfect way to accentuate your best features and allow a seamless grow-out process.

What is Balayage

Balayage is a technique to highlight or lowlight the hair through a process of painting. Your HC stylist will take sections of your hair and use a freehand technique to apply the color or lightener. Each balayage process will be different and tailored to your hair wishes. What a lot of guests love about balayage, is that as the hair grows out, the roots aren’t obvious like a traditional foil process. When the color or lightener is applied, it is blended up to the top so you will not see a harsh line of demarcation with regrowth. Needless to say, it is a lower maintenance way to achieve amazing color!

Here are some balayage-trending color options:

  • Bronde: pretty much any combination of brown and blonde. If you have a rich, dark base, some caramel and honey highlights will make your base color pop and your skin glow. With balayage, these highlights can be integrated in a subtle way leaving your hair looking beautifully sun-kissed. If your base is a lighter brown, adding balayage highlights of golden blonde will add dimension and make hair look lustrous.
  • Red: whether your hair is red or you’re ready to go red, balayage is a seamless way to integrate a new hue. If your hair is a warm brown, opt for a lighter red this time of year, like copper, strawberry or rose gold. If your hair is a warm dark brown, copper highlights will look perfectly natural while highlighting the warm undertones in your skin. With lighter brown or dark blonde hair, rose gold highlights will give you the bright pop of color.  Are you naturally a redhead? Playing with your color, even in a subtle way, will accentuate it so beautifully. Adding warm, golden blonde highlights will add beautiful sun-kissed dimension.
  • Blonde: With your light base, it’s far easier for you to get that platinum blonde. With balayage, adding lighter, cool blonde through your mids and ends will leave your hair practically drool-worthy. So, if lightest light and coolest cool are what you desire, give it a try. If you wish to deepen your root to add more dimension and less root maintenance to your balayage, ask your Hair Cuttery stylist about a shadow root.

Styling Your Balayage

When styling, many wear their hair in curls, usually the loose, beach wave type. Beach waves really show off the dimension in your hair. It allows for underneath sections to be on top and create the effect of ribbons of color through your hair. If you’re interested in finding the right hot tool for beach waves, checkout Styling Tools for Beach Waves. Of course, there is no rule that you have to curl your hair as wearing it straight will also be beautiful.

Balayage is a rather low maintenance hair coloring technique. However, you’ll want to see your Hair Cuttery Professional from time to time for a trim, toner and maybe a face-framing retouch. To keep your color looking truer longer, talk to your Hair Cuttery Professional about using pigmented shampoo and to develop a great hair care regimen.
